Reading for Today–March 26
Deuteronomy 5:1-6:25
Luke 7:11-35
Psalm 68:19-35
Proverbs 7:1-8:20
Deuteronomy means second law and that summarizes the book. Moses stands before the people of Israel and in a series of speeches goes over everything. Before this new generation enters into the Promised Land, they need to hear the message again, or for some perhaps, they hear it for the first time.
Thus the Ten Commandments are repeated in chapter five. (They first appear in Exodus 20.) But especially notice verse six. “I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in Egypt.”
The Ten Commandments are amazing rules, which if obeyed by everyone, would make the world a much better place. But they are rules based on relationship. The rules do not come from a petty tyrant infatuated with his own power. They come from a God who “rescued you from Egypt.”
