Dear Harpeth Hills:
We have all been in places that are dark – so dark that you could hardly see your hand in front of your face. These are places and situations that are unnerving and downright scary. As a child, a time like that can make an impression that stays for a lifetime. You can also recall how the light from a simple flashlight or candle can erase the darkness and bring comfort.
Imagine the darkness that consumed the disciples of Jesus after his crucifixion and death on that Friday. Think of their disappointment and grief that the one they saw as the promised Messiah whom they had followed for years was now gone. This was far from their original expectations – until Sunday! On that third day, the tomb was found to be empty – Jesus was risen. The darkness was pushed aside. John’s gospel tells us that Jesus was the shining light in our darkness, and that darkness could not overcome the light.
This is Easter Sunday – the day that celebrates God emptying the tomb. It is the day that we can point to and know that God has overcome death, sickness, and evil. It is the day that reminds us that God is on His throne, and that death does not have the last word. It is a day that reminds us that light always overcomes darkness.
Today, because of our world’s recent events, you may be in a dark place. You may be suffering from grief over the loss or sickness of a friend or loved one, concern over job insecurity, or worry about economic instability. In these times, there may be the urge to withdraw and run from Jesus, but in reality, sprinting to Jesus is the answer. He brings light into our darkness.
Jesus said: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). He tells us that if we run to him and follow him, we will not be in darkness but will have light that leads to life. What a comfort in a time of anxiety and loneliness. What consolation in a time of concern and distress. What relief in a time of insecurity.
This is Easter – a reminder of our own ultimate victory!
