Reading for Today–April 19
Joshua 19:1-20:9
Luke 19:28-48
Psalm 88:1-18
Proverbs13:12-14
Some estimate that as many as one-third of the 150 Psalms fall into the category of Lament. The writer cries out to God and at some point he (most likely) comes to his senses and proclaims trust in God. Or occasionally the Lord answers in the midst of his distress.
What makes Psalm 88 so remarkable is this Psalm does not end in hope. The lament ends with these words,
“You have taken away my companions and loved ones; only darkness remains.”
At first glance one might wonder, what in the world is this doing in the Bible? But upon further review, aren’t you glad it is? We have all had times when there seems to be no answer from our heavenly Father. Only darkness surrounds us. In these times if we cannot find the words for prayer, we turn to the Bible and recite this Psalm.
We don’t have to pretend everything is okay.
