Reading for Today–April 6
Deuteronomy 29:1-30:20
Luke 11:37-12:7
Psalm 78:1-31
Proverbs 12:19-20
“The Lord your God will cleanse your heart and the hearts of all your descendants so that you will love him with all your heart and soul, and so you may live.”
Deuteronomy 30:6
Moses makes this grand promise in the stirring finale to the blessings and curses that he lays out before the people of Israel. Yet, we know the rest of the story. The “command I am giving you today” (30:11) turned out indeed to be too difficult. Israel never could get it right. And if we had been in their shoes, we would not have either.
The promised cleansing would not arrive until the coming of the Son and the promised Holy Spirit. So in a sense, verse six is not so much a promise for that day and time but a promise of what was to come.
And what a promise it was.
