Key Scriptures for this Study: John 1:1-14; Hebrews 1:1-4; 1 John 1:1-4*
1. How does the authority of the Bible function to bring us to the person of Jesus Christ? In what sense does Jesus dominate the biblical story from Genesis to Revelation?
2. Read Philippians 2:6-11 aloud. This is an early Christian confession of faith and can serve us well in our own time as a reminder of the centrality and preciousness of Jesus of Nazareth. Scholars refer to it as the Carmen Christi (Latin for “Song to Christ”) hymn.
3. Does the “family concept” help you grasp the idea of Trinity? The term God functions very much as a family name, with three separate persons in the divine family. Does this help you understand John 1:1? John 17:20-21? How Trinity and monotheism are fully compatible?
4. The term we use to describe what John 1:14 affirms is incarnation. What does the term mean? What is its importance to Christian theology? Cf. Heb 4:15-16.
5. Why is the doctrine of Jesus’ incarnation critical to our understanding of the death of Christ? Cf. Heb 10:1-10; John 1:29.
6. When Christians use it of Jesus Christ, what does the term “Lord” mean? Why does Paul say this title or name is “above every name”?
7. What has been the primary value of this series of seven studies for you?
