23 Search me, God, and know my heart;

24 See if there is any offensive way in me,

Read Psalm 139:1-12 together. Is this good news or bad news? How might a person read
this as bad news? How might they read it as good news?
Do verses 1-6 mean, “You’re never going to get away with anything because God sees?” Or do
those verses mean, “God pays attention to you, He cares too much about you to ignore you?”
What makes the difference in the way a person reads these verses?
Do verses 7-12 mean, ”You can’t hide from God. He’s going to track you down and punish
you?” Or do those verses mean, “You can’t hide from God. He’s never going to give up on
you and you can never run far enough away that he will leave you?” What would make
someone read it one way or the other?
What shapes the way that a person understands the nature and character of God? How
might verses 15-18 have the potential to shape the way a person understands what God is
like and how God relates to them?
What do you do with verses 19-22? Why are they part of this psalm? What should they teach
us about ourselves? What should they teach us about God?
In verse 1 there is the admission that God has searched the songwriter. In verse 23 the
songwriter invites God to search them. What is the difference?
How might that change relate to verses 19-22? How might that change relate to the rest of
the psalm?
