Global Missions Update

In my experience, even when filling weeks with that loaded term “ministry,” one can still look back and occasionally wonder, “have I accomplished anything for God?” Such reflection can have a negative edge…we don’t need to be able to put our personal stamp of achievement on anything or anyone. The glory and the praise go to the Father. So as I look back, I ask less what I did and more of what I was able to participate in and witness because God allowed me to be present here.

The first Sunday I was back from the States, Silvia, María, and Anny were baptized. A few weeks later, Leandro was also born again through baptism. Today Lihuel, Ruth, Belén, and Nestor were baptized. Please remember them all as members of the congregation strive to continue to “teach them to obey all things Jesus has commanded (Matthew 28.20).

The women’s support group continues to go well. We have had approximately 8-12 mothers in attendance each week over the past 3 months. Last session, we allowed the women to tell their stories of how they realized their child had a disability. This was hard for many of them. Many tears were shed, but I think they felt relieved to be able to share their struggles and have that burden lifted from them. Please pray for Sandra and I and the mothers as we walk this difficult path together and learn about God’s purpose for each one of our lives here in Guatemala…

One of the things I have recently enjoyed seeing is how much these girls have grown to love each other. Since moving into the house…they have not been apart from each other hardly at all. They eat, sleep, study and work together – they are rarely separated. Thirteen of the girls all came from their hometown on a Wednesday. The last seven were delayed an extra day, so I went to Accra to pick them up in the Highlander. This is the scene from when we pulled into the driveway.

For the past three weeks 75,000 teachers have been on strike, and with good reason, but the ripple effects have been huge…please be praying for all of the different groups affected by this situation. Pray for teachers who are struggling financially. Pray for parents who have the added stress of not having a safe place for their children to go.

This past month was a great opportunity to get to know readers and church members in Córdoba. I´m so thankful for all the help I´ve had arranging the apartment. Aside from daily responsibilities, small get-togethers, church services, Bible studies and getting coffee with individuals, I suppose the most noteworthy events of the month have been an LST party we organized at church and a long hike organized by a friend.

With the increase in violence that is occurring in Nigeria, especially the stories circulating about the 200+ young girls who have been kidnapped – I am reminded of just how important our work is in Nigeria. For the last several years those living in the 12 northern states have been under continual risk and we hear all too often of the bombings of churches, bus stations, and now the kidnapping of these innocent young girls.
