Luminescent
Fruit of the Spirit
Sermon Series Fall 2020
Overview:
Envy comes easy. It’s not remarkable to wish for what someone else has. And there is absolutely nothing extraordinary about “pitching a fit.” Road rage. Internet rants. Conspiracy. Controversy. Division. You might think we are hardwired for it.
But sacrificial love? Unshakeable joy? Deep and lasting peace? Those qualities seem almost other-worldly. And when you encounter someone like that…they glow.
Holy Spirit makes God visible in the world by shining a light on the Word of God…both in written and in risen form. But this is not exterior lighting. It’s interior. Like a chemical reaction in the soul of a person. Like fruit being produced out of what is happening beneath the bark of a tree. It’s what happens when you bend a glow stick until you hear it crack. When Holy Spirit comes in contact with a willing human soul the result is luminescent. And you get the sense that while selfish ambition and jealousy come naturally to us…displaying the character and glory of God is what we were made for. We are to be beacons of light in a world that desperately needs direction. In the exchange between human hearts and divine Spirit dark places are illumined, scales fall off of eyes and spiritual blindness is cured. Want to know what God is like? Submit yourself willingly to the work of the Holy Spirit and you won’t just find out, you’ll show others.

Final Thoughts
Madeleine L’engle once said, “We draw people to Christ not by loudly discrediting what they believe . . . but by showing them a light that is so lovely that they want with all their hearts to know the source of it.”
