A clear vision of God can be reorienting. C.S Lewis is quoted as saying, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” The foundation of this “seeing” begins with eyes wide open God as He has revealed Himself to us. Who is this God? What is He like?
These questions are increasingly more difficult to answer for a generation that his being led to question whether this God even exists. Syncretism threatens to blur His uniqueness (holiness). Darwinism threatens to blur his creativity. Secularism threatens to blur his sovereignty. Tolerance threatens to blur his righteousness. Narcissism threatens to blur his self-sacrifice. Arrogance threatens to blur his victory. As a response the ancient words of Isaiah resound among us…
“I will lead the blind by ways they have not known,
Along unfamiliar paths I will guide them;
I will turn the darkness into light before them
And make rough places smooth.
These are the things I will do;
I will not forsake them.”
Timothy Keller highlights what he calls a “Secular Catechism,” a prevailing belief system within our popular cultural context with basic tenants that are often presented as irrefutable norms. Messages like “You need to do what makes you happy” and “You have to be true to yourself” are shared and received without much thought but are these matters of fact or statements of faith? Could it be that by accepting certain ideas as simple truths we have been putting on blindfolds when we thought we were putting on eye glasses?
Isaiah’s vision has the potential to clear some of the fog.

Isaiah had an encounter with God. He saw God. And then it seems, he couldn’t stop talking about the God he saw. For 66 chapters he does his best to describe a God who is beyond description. But he offers us glimpses. God is holy. He is creator. He is sovereign.
